John Brown was 59 years old at the time of the Harper's Ferry Raid. He had a long beard that he had grown out over the last several years. He was a very determined man. Many at his trial mentioned his eyes. They were said to be a piercing blue. Others commented on the "crazy, deranged" look that he had. Brown's look and appearance really depended upon the person's political leanings. Many anti-slavery people saw him as a holy warrior fighting for a cause. Meanwhile, pro-slavery people demonized and vilified him.
