When using the CISCO campus design terminology, the core layer aggregates lower-layer switches. This layer is primarily tasked with processing and forwarding packets as fast as possible in very large campus LANs. The core layer is also referred to as the network backbone. It provides interconnectivity between distribution layer devices. High speed devices, like high end routers and switches with redundant links are part of this layer.
