Stage directions help the audience understand the play's events because they make the action clear to the actors and director. If the actions are clear to them, then they'll be clear in performance and the audience will understand the show better. Not everything is narrated in plays, so stage directions reinforce the dialogue with the actual events that the playwright intends to physically occur.
