What is a bit?

A bit is a binary digit. It represents the smallest unit  by which information are stored in a computer.  A bit has only two states: High and Low.

4 bits can represent up to 2⁴  = 16 symbols.

5 bits can represent up to 2⁵ = 32 symbols.

Therefore, to represent 18 symbols, minimum bits required is 5.
