Plants mostly acquire carbon present in the atmosphere.
In process called 
the photosynthetic carbon in atmosphere (in form of carbon dioxide) is converted into carbohydrates by plants, releasing oxygen.
Carbon is also removed by conversion of reduced carbon to organic tissues or carbonates to hard body parts.
