Before the 25th Amendment there was Article 2 Clause 6: Vacancy and disability. At that time it was sort of a mess, when president Harrison died the succession to the presidency caused a minor fight, one half VP Tyler thought the vice president should take over and another half thought that the VP should only hold the position until an election could be held. But eventually VP Tyler assumed the full role of the president.
