Well, a polygon is just a generic shape. Triangle, Quadrilateral, Pentagon,Hexagon, Octagon, Decagon, etc. Sides are the lines that meet to make up the polygon, and vertices are the corners where the sides meet. Here are some examples: 

Triangle Quadrilateral (square, rectangle) 
3 sides 4 sides 
3 vertices 4 vertices
