5x-3=22
since what you do to one side you must do for the other, add the 3 to both sides
5x-3=22
+3 +3
then you get 5x=25
since you are multiplying with the 5x (or 5 times x) you divide on both sides.
5x divided by 5x is x
x=25
then you have to do it on the other side too
25 divided by 5
and you get x=5
