The Norman invasion or Conquest in 1066 marks the transition from Old English to Middle English. After this invasion, Latin was mostly used in official records of the Church. When taking stock of his new kingdom, William the Conquer wrote "Doomsday Book" in Latin to to show its legal authority. Anglo-Norman French was the language of nobility.
