Uhhhm... I'm not 100% sure... But, i'll give it a go. If you multiply 3 x 3 = 9. So, 5 x 3 is 15, so I would say that there are 15 chickens. Hope this helps.

Divide 3 and nine by 3 Then the ratio is 1 : 3 Multiply both sides by 5 = 5 : 15 
5 rooster to 15 chickens 
5 : 15
