First move the 9 over so it is x^2 - 8x - 9
Now you want to find 2 numbers that add to -8 and multiply to -9
The only number that work in this case are 1 and -9
Using this you can separate the equation into
(x + 1)(x - 9) = 0
This means that
x + 1 = 0
Or
x - 9 = 0

The roots of the equation are
x = -1 and
