The stomach is acidic (there is hydrochloric acid) to break down food but to also provide the optimum pH for the enzyme pepsin to work in.

The stomach is like a Pond of strong acid. This environment is perfect and our stomachs an the protein an that allows our stomachs to breakdown the proteins into smaller protein pieces , which is the first thing that we do in our digesting system.
