The other continents were unknown to Europeans. After Columbus discovered the American continents the "world" of Europe, Africa, and Asia were often referred to as the "Old World" while the Americas were called the "New World".

i believe it was called “The New World” because they did not know it existed. Of course the indigenous already lived there, but the other countries didn’t know it existed. so, they called it the new world!
