So frist thing is frist, since we are using the BODMAS. We should start with the numbers in the brackets, simplify the small bracket frist.

3p + [ 5 - (2p + 7q)]

= 3p + (5 - 2p - 7q)

= 3p - 2p - 7q + 5

= p - 7q + 5
