A group of American colonists gathered around the British soldiers and taunted them because the British soldiers were sent to the colonies to enforce taxation policies; these policies were unpopular with the colonies. The taunting escalated into throwing objects and snowballs at the British soldiers, which led do the discharge of a rifle and other soldiers shooting into the crowd.
