x^2 + 2x - 20 = 0

x^2 + 2x - 20 + 20 = 0 + 20  ( add 20 to both sides)

x^2 + 2x = 20

x^2 + 2x + 1^2 = 20 + 1^2 ( add 1^2 to both sides)

( x + 1 )^2 = 21

x = [tex]\sqrt{21}-1[/tex]

x = [tex]-\sqrt{21}-1[/tex]
