In the story "The Gift of the Magi," the author tells us that Jim and Della are "the wisest." This occurs after we learn that the lovers decided to give up their most prized possessions in order to make each other happy with special gifts. The claim that they were "the wisest" implies that their actions were the right ones. This is because the two of them understand that their love and care for each other is a lot more important than money or possessions.
