They also brought the Spanish language , though not many people speak it today. The Filipino colonial economy was oriented to satisfy the trade needs of Madrid, it traded with Asia and with the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico) in colonial times. The Philippines were the main Spanish trading post in Asia.
