Preterite is the normal past tense talking about events. Eg i went to the park with my sister = Fui al parque con mi hermana.

Fui in this case is the preterite

For imperfect it is what you used to do before but do not do any more. Usually ends in

abas

aban

(for ar endings)

preterite is "i did, i studied, i ate" ect, it talks about something short term

eg: comí= i ate

imperfect is long term "i used to do, i used to play, i used to eat" etc

eg: comía = i use to eat
