The correct answer is a Superpower.

The only two countries that left World War II with any real strength were the United States and the Soviet Union.

This set the stage for a 45-year "Cold War" wherein the two countries built up their nuclear arsenals and fought in proxy wars to determine who would be the sole superpower.

The United States won and the Soviet Union collapsed.
