It allows you to go back into something you have read, and it allows you to edit  and fix any mistakes that you might have made in a paper.

Proofreading is important so you can catch any mistakes you might have made in your writing, whether it be spelling mistakes or punctuation. It also might be necessary to proofread so you can change them if your sentences are too clunky so you can get your message across easier.
