How did the monk scribes help to preserve knowledge during the Dark Ages?

The monks were literate in a time when few were.  They provided one of the only forms of education during the Middle Ages.  Also, many were in possession of a collection of rare books.  They were responsible for copying them down by hand to preserve them.
