When the earth goes through seasons, the reason for the drastic difference in temp is because in the winter, our southern half is pointing towards the sun, which means they get more direct sunlight which in turn results in higher temperatures, and during the summer, the northern half is pointed towards the sun, so they receive higher temperatures because they have more direct sunlight.
