The rows are the one line of elements that goes from left to right horizontally. A column is a line of elements that goes vertically.

groups are number of valance electrons and periods are number of electron shells. the gtoups 13-18 have 3-8 valance electrons and groups 1 and 2 have 1 and 2 valance electrons
