Situational irony occurs when the expected outcome does not happen.  The outcome can be serious or humorous.

Situational irony is a literary device that you can identify when the outcome of a story, or statement, is opposite to what you, as a reader, expected. This outcome tends to be tragic or humorous, either way, it tends to catch our attention, it makes the story memorable and helps us think about the theme of the literary work.
