Step by step:

1.  carry out the indicated multiplication:  3p–1–p - 3 = 1

2.  Combine like terms on the left side:  2p - 4 = 1

3.  Isolate 2p by adding 4 to both sides:  2p = 5

4.  Divide as indicated to find the value of p:    p = 5/2
