Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), the current Catholic
pope, is the first pope from the Americas (specifically South America) and the
first from outside Europe since the 8th century. Pope Francis
encouraged Americans and all religions to seek greater freedoms. His exact
words were “Let us preserve liberty, let us take care of it: freedom of
conscience, religious freedom, the freedom of every person, family, and nation,
which causes other rights.”
